From watercolor-inspired designs to Impressionist or realist-style pet paintings, the possibilities are endless. Plus, with BeFunky’s handy print integration, you can print your custom pet painting as a poster, canvas, or framed masterpiece in seconds.

Ready to transform your pet photo into a painting? We’ll show you how!

How to Create a Custom Pet Portrait With BeFunky

To create a personalized pet portrait, head to the Graphic Designer. Open your pet photo by clicking Open > Image. Then, follow these 4 steps!

Step 1: Remove and Replace Your Pet Photo’s Background

Select your pet’s image with your mouse, then click Edit Image from the Image Properties panel. This will open your pet photo directly in the Photo Editor, so it’s ready to transform into a painting.

First, we’re going to replace the existing background in your pet image with a solid color. To do this, click on Background Remover in the Edit menu.

Once the background has been removed, click Change Background > Color

Click on the first color swatch to select a new background color from the Color Picker. Then, hit the “back” arrow, followed by Apply.

Step 2: Add a Painting Effect

With your pet photo’s new colored background in place, it’s now time to add a painting effect to your pet. Click Artsy in the main menu on the left, then select the painting style category you wish to use.

For this dog pup, we’re using Impasto GFX.

When you click on an effect, you can view a sample of how it looks on your pet portrait. You can adjust the strength of the painting filter using the corresponding slider or apply it as-is by clicking on the checkmark icon.

Click the left-most icon to open the Settings menu. Depending on which painting effect you choose, you will have different elements to adjust.

The most important part of this step, however, is that you only apply your painting effect to your pet and not the colored background. To do this, click on the Select tab. Then, underneath “Apply to:” select Foreground. Finally, click Apply, before clicking Done Editing Image in the top-left corner.

Step 3: Add Your Pet’s Name

Once back within the Graphic Designer, it’s time to add your pet’s name to your painting. Click Text in the main menu on the left, followed by Add Text

Double-click the textbox and type your pet’s name (or anything else you want your pet painting to contain). Any time you have a textbox selected, a Text Properties menu will appear on the left. This is where you’re able to change the font, font color, letter spacing, typographical emphasis, and so much more.

Pro Tip: Need more room on your canvas to add your pet’s name? Simply click your pet image, then resize it with your cursor. Finally, use the Customize tab to set your canvas background color to match the color used in your pet image.

Step 4: Save Your Pet Painting

Once you’ve finished editing your digital pet portrait, click the Save button at the top of the page, then select your desired save location and file type.

More Creative Custom Pet Painting Ideas

There are plenty of fun and artsy ways you can turn your pet photos into paintings. Here are some of our favorite ideas to inspire you!

An All-Over Painting Effect

Instead of isolating your pet, apply a painting effect to the entire image. Start by adding a solid-colored background, then apply your chosen painting style. We love how the painting effects can transform even the simplest backgrounds, like this yellow background in our watercolor cat portrait.

Mixed Painting Effects

You can also experiment with applying different painting styles to your pet and background. For example, we’ve paired Impasto GFX for the background with Watercolor GFX for the parrot subject. This mix-and-match approach adds depth and dimension to your portrait, plus it’s a great way to showcase your favorite painting techniques (rather than sticking to just one).

Holiday-Themed Pet Portrait

Why not create a festive pet portrait by choosing seasonal colors or patterns for the background, like red and green for Christmas or pastels for Easter? You could even add text with a holiday greeting, like “Happy Holidays from [Pet’s Name]!” This makes a perfect custom holiday card or gift for family and friends.
