Revive Old Polaroids With the Old Photo Restorer

By Samantha Cubbison | Photo Editor Tutorials

Polaroids hold a special kind of nostalgia. Their warm tones, soft edges, and instant snapshots capture memories in a uniquely tangible way. But as time wears on, even the most beloved Polaroids begin to show their age. Fading, discoloring, cracking, and more that made them so meaningful in the first place.

The good news? With BeFunky’s Old Photo Restorer, you can breathe new life into old, faded, or damaged Polaroids – no special skills or expensive equipment required. This AI-powered tool can restore clarity, repair damage, and revive details you thought were lost for good.

Can You Restore a Faded or Damaged Polaroid?

Absolutely. Polaroids may be fragile, but they’re not beyond saving. BeFunky’s Old Photo Restorer is designed to fix exactly the kind of damage that Polaroids are prone to: faded colors, surface cracks, or lost facial detail. In just a few clicks, you can recover what time has worn away.

How to Restore a Polaroid Photo

Before you begin, make sure your Polaroid is digitized. You can scan it at a high resolution or snap a clear photo with your phone – just make sure it’s well-lit and taken from a flat angle.

Step 1: Upload Your Polaroid

Head to the Old Photo Restorer (this can be found in the Edit tab, under Detail Enhancements) and open your digitized Polaroid. Drag and drop the file directly onto the canvas and watch the tool get to work immediately. With this as a starting point, we can make further adjustments and enhance your photo’s overall quality.

Step 2: Fine-Tune the Old Photo Restorer

Once the effect is applied, you’ll see a Before/After slider to compare your results. Want to get even more involved? Use the customization options:

  • Increase Scratch Reduction to smooth out heavy creases or cracks.
  • Turn on Recover Faces to bring facial features into focus.
  • Recolor B&W gives any black and white photo a vibrant color palette.
  • Finally, use the Select tab to apply restoration only to specific parts of your image. This is particularly handy if you want the frame of your polaroid to stay the same color and maintain its texture.

Once you're done refining the results, click Apply.

Step 3: Remove Objects or Blemishes

After applying the Old Photo Restorer, there are a ton of additional features to take advantage of. To remove small dirt spots around the frame, we'll use the Object Eraser to make them disappear in a single click. This tool is also handy for removing distractions – such as people, stains, and more.

Step 4: Save and Share Your Restored Polaroid

When you're happy with the results, click Save and choose your preferred format. JPG is great for sharing online, while PDF is best for printing a fresh copy of your restored photo.

Inspiration: Go Beyond Basic Restoration

Once you’ve mastered the basics, here are a few inspiring ways to use the Old Photo Restorer for even the most challenging Polaroid projects:

Recover Facial Details in Polaroids

Group Polaroids are notoriously tricky. People often end up blurred, faded, or lost in poor lighting. The Recover Faces toggle works wonders here to bring clarity to every face in the scene – so no one gets left behind in the restoration process.

Restore Super Damaged Polaroids

Torn edges, deep scratches, or water-stained Polaroids? The combination of Scratch Reduction and Select Mode lets you target specific problem areas without over-editing the rest of the image. Pair it with other image enhancing features such as the Object Eraser, Clone tool, Denoiser, and more – and you have the perfect solution for those Polaroids you thought were beyond saving.

Fix Underexposed Polaroids

Under exposure is common in instant photography — especially in bright sunlight. The Old Photo Restorer helps balance brightness and contrast while recovering hidden detail, making washed-out areas look intentional and beautifully vintage rather than blown out.
